The Internet Governance Forum begins next week. The Internet Governance Project, in collaboration with the Centre for Communication Governance at the National Law University of Delhi, India has organized a workshop on The IANA Transition: A new era in Internet governance?
The workshop’s goal is to discuss and explore the changes in the IANA functions that have been proposed (but not yet fully implemented, or approved by the NTIA) as part of the transition process. It draws heavily on members of the IANA stewardship coordination group as well as independent academics.
The workshop is not intended to be a passive, one-way description of the transition proposals, but will focus on critical examination of the issues raised by the structural separation of the Post-Transition IANA (PTI) from ICANN. Panelists and the audience members will discuss the implications of giving each operational community (names, numbers and protocols) the ability to choose another IANA functions operator other than ICANN. We will discuss various rationales for separability, the different arrangements of each operational community, the possibility of different IANAs for each operational community, and the fate of the IANA-related trademarks and domains. The group will also consider the need for a post-transition revision in the mission statement of ICANN, and explore some of the changes underway in the critical Root Zone Maintainer role.
